Born in Newmarket in Q2-1897 [Newmarket 3b:512] to William Henry and Mary Ann SINGLETON (née JARVIS), of 5 Melton Cottages, Green Road, Newmarket.

1901 census...William [3] was at Melton Cottages, Green Road, Newmarket with his father William H [40] stableman born Manchester, his mother Mary Ann [33] born Newmarket, sisters Elsie M [6], Olive I [5] and Gladys A [8 months]. All the children were Newmarket born.

1911 census...William H [13] was staying with his Aunt, Mary SINGLETON at 164 Roe Lane, Southport. His parents , three sisters and younger brother John [5] born Newmarket, were still at 5 Melrose Cottages, Newmarket.


He enlisted in Southport. The 25th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers was formed on 4 March 1917, in Egypt, from dismounted Montgomery and Welsh Horse Yeomanry. They came under orders of 231st Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division, and moved to France in early May 1918.
As William died at the South African Hospital, Abbeville, it is not possible, without his military records, to be sure when and where he was wounded

William is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France- Ref:IV.G.13
and is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour of the Congregational Church, Newmarket
